Rest is a necessity

A month ago, I was looking forward to exploring a new city for my February vacation.

Walking its streets, discovering its history, and soaking in the energy of a place I’d never been before.

And then life happened.

A teenager with a sprained ankle made a city vacation a less-than-ideal choice.
So with just two weeks before departure, we pivoted.

We went to the beach instead.
And it turned out to be exactly what we needed.

One of my favorite things about a beach vacation (and there are many) is taking long walks with Pete Carpenter.

On one of those walks, we talked about the difference between the vacations we want and the vacations we need.

So often, we plan trips that keep us moving, seeing, and doing.

And while those experiences are incredible, they aren’t always restful.
In fact, they can leave us more exhausted than when we started.

The same is true in leadership.

We tell ourselves we’ll rest when things slow down.

We keep pushing through packed schedules.
But when we never create space to pause, we burn out.

Rest isn’t a luxury.
It’s a necessity.

And sometimes, we have to be intentional about choosing it.
